A Look at “Change”
Many psychologists, therapists, and
psychiatrists will agree with the statement,
“The human organism by its very nature resists
change.” There is a word that some “systems thinkers”
coined called “Homeostasis.”
For these thinkers, the meaning attached
to this word is that the human being will
consistently seek a level of comfort or
stability at all costs.
This dynamic is an intricate part
of how our physical systems work. For instance, when our body has gone a certain
length of time without nourishment, it becomes
unable to sustain the system adequately.
Consequently, it will take measures
via the wonderful communication processes
inherent in our brains and bodies and communicate
to itself that it needs to take some action
to get back to a nourished state – homeostasis.
Our psyche works very similarly.
If a person is gregarious and has
been without human interaction for a long
period of time, they will begin to “feel
lonely.”
This produces internal or emotional
discomfort.
Therefore, this person will seek
to remedy this discomfort by reaching out
to interact with someone who will help them
fill this emotional need.
When considering the idea of homeostasis
in the context of goal achievement, it is
clear that there will be an opposing dynamic
inherent in the undertaking. For example, a person may wish to lose a certain
amount of weight.
This will require some “discomfort”
in a few areas in order to achieve the goal. Some of these areas of discomfort may be:
- Eating different (healthier) foods
- Avoiding certain foods
- Exercising
- Undertaking a new routine
Many
people have a schedule with which they regulate
their daily lives. In the example above, certain foods at certain
times are the norm.
A breakfast may include bacon and
eggs, or cereal, or simply coffee. No matter what the content, the idea is that
this meal is regularly adhered to for the
most part. When implementing a new eating routine, the
foods may (or must) change.
Consequently, the body, as well as
the mind, must adapt to the change.
top Professional Cleaning London get quote now. The
human body is an amazing organism in so
many ways, and it is especially amazing
when it comes to the idea of adaptation. Consider exercise. The muscles are wonderful examples of how splendidly
the body adapts to change.
A person who wishes to increase muscle
size or function may perform weight-bearing
exercises on a regular basis.
The muscles being stimulated by the
exercises will, if fed and rested properly,
actually grow or “adapt” to the new work
being asked of it.
However,
in the above example, the process may induce
some “discomfort” for the person while they
are in the process of working the muscle.
First, they must change their routine
to include exercise. Next, they must plan what muscles are going
to be worked, then how they will work them,
etc. After the workout, the muscle, if stimulated
properly, may have some minor soreness as
a result of the workout. However, the muscle will eventually adapt due
to the work.
The person then “resets” the homeostatic
balance to the new level of muscle development. This is comparable to resetting a home thermostat.
A
person who wishes to advance in their career
or make a career change must also deal with
change.
This kind of change process is very
similar to the exercise and nutrition process. The design is that the person starts with an
idea, makes a plan, then sets about achieving
the goals in that plan.
In
considering a career change, the goal achieving
process may require the person to obtain
new or more advanced education.
An undertaking of this magnitude
will require some significant changes in
many areas of life.
Certainly, there will be a change
in time management, especially if the person
must work full-time while attending classes.
Additionally, there will be an effect
on relationships, such as time with family
and friends. There should probably be a time budget that
includes time for work, school, family,
some form of exercise, study, and, not least
importantly, stress relief time.
This
is a time where many unpleasant or undesired
things can, and sometimes do, happen. Therefore, it is critical to understand the
change process, the goal achievement process,
and be able to mold one’s inner self, or
mind, or whatever one wishes to call it,
to accomplish what one sets about to do.
This
can be a time laden with frustration, anger,
impatience, and a host of other “uncomfortable”
feeling states.
However, many people are indeed accomplishing
their goals. Many people are undergoing this very process
every day, every year.
Will you be one of the few who can
achieve their goals without losing a valued
relationship, losing a needed job, becoming
so overwhelmed that you end up quitting
school, or putting off your goal?
There is a way to accomplish your
goals and still maintain a sense of joy
along the way.
There
is a manner in which a person can achieve
their goals and keep the things they value
during the process.
Nonetheless, it is not without hard
work and effort.
Are you aware that the National Institute
of Health reports that 98% of the people who diet fail to keep
their weight off?
Something happens to them, and much
of it has to do with the concept or idea
of homeostasis. There is so much more to say about the subject.
There are literally thousands of
diets, get rich quick schemes, and millions
of words that have been said or written
about achieving goals.
However, only a comparatively small
percentage of persons in this country actually
clarify, set, and achieve their goals.
Will you be in the achieving
percentage this day, month, or year?
