What Is, And Why Use Personalized Goal Setting Services?
Are You Bored Or Feeling The Need To Change Something?
Many
people periodically struggle with feelings
of stagnation in one or more areas of their
lives. This
is a normal occurrence, and something to
be cherished and
heeded. If you are having these feelings, in my opinion,
it means that you are a thoughtful, intelligent,
bright, healthy person who does not want
to settle for the status quo. It is also an excellent sign that you are willing
to be honest with yourself, openly evaluate
your current situation, and explore ways
in which you might make a positive change.
It
may be helpful to try to identify in which
area(s) of your life the feelings of stagnation
are coming from.
Maybe these feelings of stagnation
are in these areas:
·
Relationships
(romantic, family, friends, etc…)
·
Career (advancement,
wage, begin a new career, etc…)
·
Fitness
·
Nutrition
·
Health
·
Education
(getting that degree you always wanted,
if you should get specialized training or
education for purely personal reasons, etc…)
These
feelings of stagnation are your mind’s way
of letting you know that you need to take
action!
People seem to react in different
ways to their mind’s promptings in this
area. Some choose to try to ignore these feelings,
others choose to acknowledge these feelings
but not act. Still others have a strong desire to act upon
these uncomfortable feelings of stagnation,
but may not know the specifics of beginning
the process of making positive changes in
their lives.
Are
You Overwhelmed With The
Amount Of Goal Setting Information
And Services On The Market?
There
are a lot of programs and people selling
goal setting information on the market today! You can find excellent programs for any specific
thing, in just about any information or
advertising media. Many of them have celebrities with clever slogans
selling their own products, guides, books,
and other things to help the interested
person achieve their particular goal or
goals. That is why this is such a great country!
The information is certainly out
there and available, usually for a price.
I believe there is excellent and
appropriate information out there, as well
as information that may be sub-standard.
That is where difficulty comes in.
Just how does one judge the information
prior to purchasing it? There is always a risk involved in buying information
without trying it.
The information may just be wrong,
poorly presented, not what you were looking
for, or simply too expensive.
Some ways to evaluate a program you
might decide to use are:
- Statistics. Information that accurately
portrays the effectiveness of a particular
product. The only difficulty with statistics is
that statistical analysis experts can
manipulate data in a sophisticated way
to show what they want the data to show.
- Word
of
mouth. A person
who has actually used a particular program
and can vouch for its effectiveness is
enormously helpful.
However, one must be aware that
goal setting is a highly personal undertaking
and since all people are unique and not
robots, no two people respond to these
types of stimulus in the same way.
- Advertising. Fortunately or unfortunately, our free
market society uses this mode of communicating
services heavily. There are some very clever
advertising methods with great commercials
that have entertained us and we
will remember for our entire lives.
Remember the little old lady,
asking “Where’s the beef?”
Unfortunately, many advertising
campaigns are not geared
toward providing in-depth information
about a product; they are geared toward
grabbing a potential customer’s attention
and pointing them to the product or services.
Therefore, unless the advertising
is informational in nature, I do not recommend
that you make a decision to use a service
based upon this alone.
- Internet Websites.
I have come to rely heavily
on the Internet for gathering information.
It is interesting that I am finding
most websites offering a wealth of information,
and the beauty of this system is that
the interested party can decide to take
in as much information as they desire
during one or more visits to a particular
website.
This seems optimal.
I have also appreciated that many
websites offer a large volume of information
so that the reader may come to “get a
feel” for the program, or organization,
or individual.
Much of the information is
specifically designed to inform
the potential customer of the services
provided, and give them enough information
so that the customer will ultimately buy
their product.
- Libraries
and Bookstores.
A careful search through your favorite
bookstore or library may be helpful in
finding a reasonably priced goal setting
program, system, or philosophy.
However, this is a rather lonely
journey unless you find a book or materials
that offer some type of contact with the
author of the materials. Oftentimes, Amazon.com has books listed
with a ratings category.
This is where readers of the material
who felt so motivated, offered commentary
on their experience of reading the book,
or materials. However, this can be somewhat misleading
since some people can absolutely love
something, where another person has a
strong reaction in the opposite way.
Ultimately, you must judge for
yourself.
- Using
a free initial consult. If a program offers a free initial
consult for a prospective customer to
inquire about the services or program,
this is optimal.
The cost is your valuable time,
but will save you money and aggravation
in the long run.
The consult should ideally be with
the person who authored the book, materials,
or personally conducts the services. If a customer is considering engaging the
services of a personalized service, in
my opinion, they should expect to speak
directly with the author of the materials,
or to a “certified” person in that program.
An initial consult with the author
or person who conducts the personalized
services is optimal because it allows
the potential customer the opportunity
to interact with this person to see if
they might develop a positive connection
with them.
Hopefully the potential customer will have read all of
the information on the website(s) and
made a list of topics and questions to
ask during the consult so that they will
use this free time as effectively and
efficiently as possible.
Why
You Might Consider Enlisting The
Help Of A Person
Or Service For Setting Goals:
I
have been interested in nutrition and exercise
for many years. I have always been amazed at the number of different
“diets,” pills, powders, secret formulas,
medical doctor designed diets, and everything
else there is available in the United
States
for diet and exercise. The weight loss industry in America
is a multi-billion dollar business!
But, obesity remains a significant problem. I have given much thought to this. There are probably many more reasons than I
care to try and
list here to explain possible reasons for
the obesity problem in our country.
However, it remains clear that some
people can and do achieve their weight loss
goals using a number of different systems. Yet, other folks seem to have more of a struggle
achieving their weight loss goals, no matter
what program, diet, or system they use.
Another
area where people may experience a struggle
is attempting to find a suitable career
or career path.
They may have difficulty staying
with an educational path they have chosen,
and decided to drop out.
They may even have trouble identifying
a potential career path to
even start moving toward something
different.
They may feel stuck and not sure
of where they should explore, yet they have
a strong desire to do something different.
Still
another area a person may struggle finding
“success” is in their relationships. Maybe they are having difficulty finding a mate,
or maintaining a valued relationship.
These
hypothetical individuals may not have any
identified emotional issues and not wish
to enter into personal therapy with a mental
health professional in a mental health setting;
they may simply wish to establish clear
goals for themselves in these areas in order
to begin a positive move toward these goals
that will be healthy, successful, and positive
in their lives. This is where the concept of personalized goal
setting assistance can be of inestimable
value.
I
have spoken to numerous people who have
intimated to me that they do not want therapy;
they just want someone to talk with that
can provide them with helpful information,
encouragement, feedback, and support in
order to help them achieve their goals.
Sometimes this person cannot be a
friend or relative.
It might be more helpful to speak
to an impartial person. However, many of these same people have also
stated to me that they have a hard time
trying to justify the significant cost that
some goal setting assistance
persons or services charge.
